UST VS ADAMSON – On the first night of the Shakey’s Super League Collegiate Pre-season Championship, Saturday, September 24, at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila, University of Santo Tomas edged out Adamson in a long five-game match, 25-20, 27-29, 15-25, 29-27, 15-10.

When the fifth set was tied at 10, the Lady Tigresses won by scoring five straight points against the Lady Tamaraws.

The match didn’t end until the wee hours of Sunday, September 25th, thanks to a 5-0 run that UST’s veteran leader Eya Laure orchestrated. Laure was responsible for three of the five points, including back-to-back hits in the last two rallies, which effectively ended the first day’s action.

The Pool B showdown between UST and Adamson was originally slated to start at 6:00 p.m., but it didn’t get going until 10 minutes before 11:00 p.m. and went until a little over 1:00 a.m. the following day because of the other games that ran long.

Far Eastern University, led by Salak’s alma mater’s former head coach Tina Salak, upset the reigning champions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, College of St. Benilde, in five sets (25-20, 24-26, 19-25, 25-22, 15-11) earlier in the quadrupleheader.

After the Lady Blazers fell down early in the third set, the Lady Tamaraws sealed the deal with an ace from Barbie Jamili.

Player of the Game honors go to FEU’s Chenie Tagaod, who led the team with 20 points thanks to 17 attacks and 3 service aces.

The first match of the Shakey’s Super League season was another nail-biting battle, as Perpetual escaped San Beda in four sets (24-26, 25-21, 25-23, 27-25).

Perpetual was on the verge of victory in the fourth set when promising youngster Shaila Omipon made a thrilling debut for the Lady Altas, scoring 17 points and contributing to an off-the-block hit that ended the game.
