Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! On Saturday, September 24 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila, University of the East defeated Mapua in five sets (31-33, 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12) to begin its Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Collegiate Pre-season Championship campaign.
After dropping the first set and being knotted up for the rest of the match, the Lady Warriors broke free with a 7-2 run in the middle of the fifth set to secure the victory.
KC Cepada led UE with 21 points, while Lia Pelaga and Von Dimacungalan added 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Ronwald Dimacungalan, head coach of the University of Evansville, said his squad struggled to handle the Louisville Lady Cardinals because of a poor first set.
We didn’t play like ourselves and got off to a rough start. To paraphrase what Dimaculangan stated, “we allowed ourselves to play on Mapua’s speed rather than us controlling the tempo.
The decisive set was tied at 7-7 when UE broke through to earn the first match point, at 14-9.
While Hannah De Guzman was serving for UE and had just scored an ace, she hit the net with her next serve, giving the match point to Mapua and preventing UE from claiming victory.
It was a sloppy victory, but I saw that they had what it takes to get back on their feet. We’ll make an effort to correct our errors going forward,” Dimaculangan said.
Mapua capitalized on UE’s poor receiving to take a six-point lead, 20-14, but at the end of the period the score was knotted at 27. The Lady Cardinals’ 10-point scorer, De Guzman, closed off the first set with two straight points.
