Germany defeated Kazakhstan in three sets (25-15, 25-18, 25-21), while reigning champion Serbia defeated Bulgaria in five games (25-21, 22-25, 25-27, 25-21, 15-9).
The United States, Germany, and Serbia are the only three teams in Pool C with two victories after the first two games. Only the United States has won both of its matches in straight sets, and thus lead the group with six points, tied with Germany, but with a superior set ratio than Serbia’s five.
All three of Bulgaria (1 pt), Canada (0), and Kazakhstan (0) have yet to win a game this tournament. At the end of group play in the Netherlands and Poland, the top four teams in terms of overall standing will advance to the knockout round.
Alexandra “Ali” Frantti, the American offense’s go-to player, did it again. The 26-year-old outside hitter’s 52% hitting percentage was superb against the Canadians, as he contributed 15 points (14 kills, 1 block).
United States Pool C’s top

Frantti said, “At the end of the day, we’re simply having fun.” We know every team will bring their A-game to the World Championship, which is why we’ve been working so hard. I am really pleased with how hard everyone on our team has worked today, and we will continue to press on. At the tail end of the second set, they gave us some trouble, but we were prepared to fight for every point and we went for it.
Chiaka Ogbogu dominated the middle with six kills and four blocks, while Olympic champion opposite Annie Drews, who had a 50% efficiency rate in hitting, was close behind her with 14 points (11 kills, one block, two aces).
For Canada, outside hitter Alexa Gray contributed another nine points while opposite Kiera van Ryk equaled Frantti’s output with 15 points (all in kills).
