Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Tampa Bay Rays will send right-hander Tyler Glasnow to the mound on Wednesday to face the Cleveland Guardians. After missing time due to Tommy John surgery and rehabilitation, Glasnow will make his major league debut on April 8. We anticipate that he will be restricted to 45 pitches.
Before injuring his elbow, 29-year-old Glasnow had established himself as a top-tier starter. Through 261 innings worked with the Rays in 48 appearances, he has a 3.10 ERA (134 ERA+) and a 4.32 K:BB ratio.
At the trade deadline in 2018, the Pittsburgh Pirates sent Chris Archer to the Tampa Bay Rays with right-handed pitcher Shane Baz and outfielder Austin Meadows in exchange for Glasnow. (Since then, the Rays have sent Meadows to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for infielder Isaac Paredes.) The Rays secured cost certainty and financial stability for both themselves and Glasnow when they extended his contract this summer by two years and more than $30 million.
The Rays have been inundated with terrible news this weekend, but Glasnow’s comeback is a positive development. The aforementioned Baz had his own Tommy John surgery disclosed on Saturday and will miss the remainder of this season as well as next. Back problems have also ended the season for Brandon Lowe, the team’s second baseman.
When play on Sunday began, the Rays had an 84-68 record, one game behind of the Toronto Blue Jays for the top wild card slot in the American League. The Rays continue to have a half-game lead over the Seattle Mariners for second place. Additionally, the Rays lead the first-place Baltimore Orioles by 4.5 games.
