Red Bull motorsport chief Helmut Marko had been pursuing a deal to bring Herta into his driver stable and place him at sister team AlphaTauri for the 2019 season as a possible replacement for Pierre Gasly, who has been linked to the now-vacant seat at Alpine following Fernando Alonso’s shocking switch to Aston Martin for 2023.
Herta, who is 22 years old, is the youngest driver to ever win an IndyCar race, with seven victories in the series since 2019. With three Grands Prix scheduled to take place in the United States next season, an American driver making the jump to F1 may have been the next step in the expansion of the sport in the United States.
However, despite his winning record in IndyCar, Herta lacks the necessary 40 super licence points to compete in Formula 1.
Red Bull was said to be attempting to circumvent this ban so that the Californian may have joined Yuki Tsunoda’s squad for the next season.
And on Friday, the FIA said that they had received an inquiry on his super licence status and his potential switch to Formula 1.
A representative said: “The FIA confirms that a request was made via the proper procedures, which resulted in the FIA certifying that Colton Herta lacks the requisite amount of points to be given an FIA Super Licence.
“The FIA regularly analyzes its laws and processes, particularly those pertaining to Super Licence eligibility, with safety, experience, and performance in the context of the route being the primary considerations.”
The comment looks to ruin Red Bull’s aspirations of signing Herta for the next season, which might also end Alpine’s hopes of drawing Gasly away from AlphaTauri, since Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said that they would only release Gasly if they had a replacement lined up.
“Gasly is a Red Bull Racing driver who is currently on loan to AlphaTauri. Currently, there are several plates in motion, which we observe with keen attention. We’ll have to wait and watch, there are many moving parts… “You won’t release Pierre if you don’t put anything interesting in that automobile,” he remarked.
